Video Round-up: Hip-Hop Artists on Fatherhood

It may seem odd that a 31-year-old white male from the epitome of suburbia in the South would like hip-hop, but I do. I see GOOD hip-hop as a poetic art form that, like all other art, can be an expression of our God who created so many gratuitously beautiful masterpieces.

There are a couple of recording labels for Christ-minded artists that are trying to bring the light of the Gospel to urban society. (Humble Beast and Reach) They also a have a lot to say about fatherhood. Below are a couple of videos that I found inspiring and enlightening on the topic of fatherhood and our Father God.

Even if you don't like hip-hop (and it's fine if you don't), at least listen to the message.

By Lecrae from Reach Records and 116 Clique: (see also ManUp116)

By Propaganda from Humble Beast: (check this out, too)

I'm not suggesting such artists are a watered-down, christianized alternative to a secular art form--that gives the art form over to the Evil One. Art is God's, and these guys are doing it well to the glory of the One from whom all aesthetic beauty flows.

  1. I agree with what you are saying. Everyone has their own different ways of learning and getting something to click in their mind then later remembering it.

    1. Thanks for commenting. (+2pt) But, I'm not sure what connection you're making to the article. Do you mean that hip hop could be a way for some people to learn the message of biblical fatherhood?

  2. I think that's what Sarah is saying. Kids today don't want to listen the the old hymns and stuff we sing in church all the time. So Christian rap is a great way to listen to fun music that teaches you about God. Love the first song so much :)

    1. I see. I love both, if well written. Some old hymns just have terrible theology, but others are rich and beautiful. The same goes for hip hop or any other art form. While I wouldn't suggest having Christian hip hop music in church services, I think it entirely appropriate for entertainment for Christians. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I thought both videos were great. The first really made me think about my dad and how much he means to me, but it also makes me see how important our Heavenly Father is. We should want to be like Him in everything!! The content of the second video makes so much since in a lot of ways, children (we) need more time with our dads, not necessarily more "stuff" from them.

  4. I think Christian rap is a perfect way to make Christian music look attractive to the younger crowd. I , for one, am not a fan of the K-Love Christian music genre. I think that it all sound somewhat similar. Christian rap incorporates a music genre I already love although secular, and gives me actually decent and listenable lyrics.

  5. Yeh I would have to agree with the others.People shouldn't look down on hip hop just because most of it today is bad. LeCrae is a perfect example of how God can use hip hop to reach those who have never heard of Him.I don't think it's weird or unusual that you listen to this everyone should. Music plays a major role in our society and it's a great way to reach the unsaved.

  6. I have to say I am glad you enjoy Christian hip hop because I love it. I have a Christian hip hop station on my pandora. Christian hip hop is a great way to get older kids/teens away from the bad music and to actually learn something from it. If it has a good message, that is a great way to get teens to Christ and to see God through a different tunnel. Most kids/teens don't want to go to church because the church sings old hymns or songs that are slow and boring to them. Christian hip hop is a great way to get your favorite music and a little gospel in one! Btw, I enjoyed the songs you posted in this article.

  7. Like any kind of media, it's all about how it's used. I personally just like the music I like and feel like attaching myself to a certain group can limit my musical choices. It's really surprising to me to hear that you actually like hip-hop though! You might also trying looking up some Spoken Word(kinda like the Gospel in 4 mins. we watched in the Drama chapel) pretty moving stuff.

  8. I agree with Audra! It's definitely a surprise you enjoy hip hop! Personally, hip hop and rap is my favorite genre. I agree that the message is what matters, not the style of the art. Anything can be used to the glory of God, even rap music. And I "amen" Audra's suggestion to look up spoken word poetry. I particularly enjoy The Woman At the Well.

  9. I really feel for kids that come from a bad family life and don't have a good Christian role model in their dad. Reading and listening to these videos made me appreciate my dad even more.

  10. It is extremely sad how many kids do not have a good Christian dad to look up to. They need that roll model in their lives and my parents adopted my brother and sister to teach them about God and how to live. Also these videos made me appreciate my dad even my mom even more.

  11. I love how LeCrae is using his talents to reach audiences that maybe wont come near a church. He is really reaching out and using his awesome gift to glorify God.

  12. Watching these videos made me realize that im very lucky to have a dad that will love me and care for me. Being over seas as a missionary for a while and here in the us i see many kids who dont have a father. Usually kids who dont have a father end up getting to bad things and bad situations-Josiah Smith

  13. I'm at school so these videos were bloocked, but I get the idea of what you're saying, and I agree. I'm not a fan of rap or much music at all, other than some country, but I can appreciate it as art.

  14. I was a huge hip-hop fan. RIght now, I am more into pop. I never knew that there was a hip hop for Christians. You've shown me a lot of hip hop videos and I liked them. Their lyris were actually giving me information and messages. There were a lot of lyric video for the hip hop songs. I actually looked at them and thought how they affected my life. It is unusual for me to think about those things. I look forward to listen better songs!
